A major joint operation between Building Commission NSW and SafeWork NSW in the Hunter Region has wrapped up, following weeks of inspections aimed at lifting building standards and improving safety.
During March, inspectors from both agencies visited building sites across the region, along with local schools, training facilities and community pop‑up events. In the lead‑up to the Hunter visit, Building Commission NSW inspectors carried out checks at 36 sites, issuing 18 Penalty Infringement Notices totalling $12,000.
Unlicensed work was the most common offence identified, accounting for 11 of the penalty notices. No building orders were issued, with inspectors confirming issues found on site were either fixed immediately or are now being rectified. Additional fines were issued for unlicensed contracting and missing builder signage.
SafeWork NSW inspectors also visited 27 worksites, focusing on risks such as falls from heights, falling objects and mobile plant. The inspections resulted in 57 improvement notices and five prohibition notices. Inspectors identified concerns including inadequate site security, missing principal contractor signage and a lack of toilet and handwashing facilities.
As part of the visit, Building Commission NSW staff engaged with around 105 students at Rutherford Technology High School and Hunter Trade College, sharing industry experience and career pathways.
