Primary school students in the Upper Hunter are learning how democracy works through an interactive outreach program delivered by the Parliament of NSW.

Year 5 and 6 students at Muswellbrook South Public School took part in the curriculum‑aligned Discovering Democracy program, which focuses on civic engagement and the law‑making process.

The President of the Legislative Council, Ben Franklin, joined students during the session, which included exploring the three levels of government through problem‑solving activities based on real community issues.

Students then stepped into simulated parliamentary chambers, debating and passing a bill in a mock Legislative Assembly before reviewing and voting on amendments in a Legislative Council role‑play.

Mr Franklin said programs like this help demystify democracy and show students their voice matters, regardless of where they live.

The outreach initiative is being delivered across seven regional NSW schools this week.
