A Hunter-based civil construction company has been recognised at a statewide industry event for its work repairing a major Upper Hunter road.
Daracon Group took out its category at the Civil Contractors Federation NSW Earth Awards for the restoration of Coulsons Creek Road on MR358 – the Merriwa-Willow Tree Road. The project was awarded the top honour in the category for works valued between $30 million and $75 million.
The road was closed to all traffic in January 2021 after problems emerged following earlier construction work carried out in 2019. The closure left motorists facing lengthy detours when travelling between Merriwa, Quirindi and Tamworth, severing a key link between the Upper Hunter and the New England North-West region.
Upper Hunter Shire Council secured funding from both the Australian and New South Wales Governments to fund the restoration. Daracon commenced work in March 2024 and completed the project late last year, with the reopening of Coulsons Creek Road restoring the important regional connection.
The Civil Contractors Federation NSW Earth Awards recognise excellence in civil construction across the state.
