Contactless payments are now available on bus services in Muswellbrook, as part of a statewide upgrade to public transport across rural and regional NSW.

The State Government says the tap‑and‑go system has been installed on nearly 350 fare‑paying buses across 47 regional bus networks, allowing passengers to pay using mobile phones, smartwatches, or debit and credit cards. Cash payments will continue to be accepted.

The program was delivered over ten months, launching in Wagga Wagga in July 2025 and finishing in Queanbeyan earlier this month. Transport for NSW says more than 140,000 tickets have already been purchased using contactless payments, accounting for about 40 per cent of all journeys on equipped services.

Minister for Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison said the upgrade followed long‑standing calls from regional communities for simpler and more modern payment options.

“We know that making buses easier to use can help boost patronage and give families the option to leave the car at home, saving on fuel and everyday costs,” she said.

The contactless ticketing program does not include dedicated school services, where students typically use pre‑paid bus passes, or NSW TrainLink long‑distance coach services, which require pre‑purchased tickets.
