Muswellbrook Hospital is set to benefit from a statewide hospital maintenance and equipment program under the 2026–27 State Budget, with funding directed towards infrastructure upgrades and essential medical equipment.

The $400 million program will be rolled out across New South Wales, with Muswellbrook specifically named among the facilities to receive support. Works are expected to include upgrades to imaging and other medical equipment, as well as building repairs such as roofing, waterproofing and façade improvements. Fire safety systems, engineering services and heating and ventilation infrastructure are also set to be upgraded.

The most significant change to healthcare services in Muswellbrook remains the ongoing $45 million Stage 3 redevelopment of the hospital. Construction on that project began in February 2025 and is expected to continue through to 2027.

The redevelopment will deliver a new operating theatre, a dedicated procedure room and a new sterilising department. Community health clinical spaces are also being relocated into the hospital as part of the upgrade.

However, critics are still bemused at the lack of a maternity ward at the hospital.
