Singleton Council says it is deeply saddened following a vandalism incident at Sedgefield Cemetery that damaged seven headstones between 26 and 27 May.
In a statement, a council spokesperson said the incident had caused distress to affected families and the wider community. Council has reported the matter to NSW Police, who have commenced an investigation.
Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity at the cemetery on or around 27 May is urged to contact Crime Stoppers NSW on 1800 333 000.
Council staff are currently on site assessing the damage and working through the most appropriate and respectful way to restore the affected memorials.
The spokesperson said supporting impacted families was the council’s highest priority, with staff attempting to contact those affected. Families with loved ones in the Anglican Monumental Sections 1 or 2 who have not yet been contacted are encouraged to reach out to Council’s Cemetery Management Officer on 02 6578 7290.
Singleton Council has apologised for the hurt caused by the incident and thanked the community for its understanding as efforts continue toward a respectful and lasting resolution.
