The stacks at Liddell Power Station are set to be demolished later in May, marking a major milestone in the site’s transition.
AGL Chief Executive Damien Nicks says the demolition follows years of planning, with multiple teams involved in preparing the site. He says the stacks will be brought down first, before the remainder of the power station is removed.
“It’s a huge planning process. It’s been planned for many, many years,” Mr Nicks said.
“At the end of the stacks, then we’ll remove the rest of the Liddell Power Station.”

Mr Nicks says once demolition is complete, the site will be opened up for future development opportunities. He says Liddell’s existing infrastructure and transmission access make it well suited for new industrial energy uses.
“This site is a fantastic site for industrial energy hubs,” he said.
“We see a great opportunity here for more business coming back into this region.”
In bad news for community members wishing to view the demolition, it’s believed the event will be closed for public viewing due to safety concerns. For similar reasons, a temporary closure of the New England Highway is also expected, despite it being outside the exclusion zone.
