Peabody says negotiations over a new enterprise agreement at its Wambo coal mine remain at a standstill, despite the company revising part of its offer at the 18th bargaining meeting with the Mining and Energy Union.
In a statement attributed to a Peabody spokesperson, the company said it had come to a recent meeting prepared to improve its offer, following recent public comments from the union suggesting there may be scope for movement on remuneration. Peabody said it revised its position on an Accident Pay clause claim at the union’s request, but the union’s position on remuneration remained unchanged from previous meetings.
“We were encouraged by recent positive public comments suggesting there may be scope for progress in negotiations and attended today’s meeting ready to continue working through the remaining issues with the aim to reach an agreement,” the spokesperson said, adding there had been “limited progress” despite the revised Accident Pay position.
The spokesperson said Peabody’s latest offer remained on the table, describing it as a fair and competitive package.
Peabody said it remained committed to reaching an agreement that was fair for employees and sustainable for the operation, and would continue to work constructively with the Mining and Energy Union and employee representatives.
