A massive new charging hub planned for regional NSW could make life easier for electric car drivers, with space for 37 vehicles to charge at once.
Sick of waiting to charge?
There’s nothing worse than pulling into a charging station on a road trip, only to find a queue of cars ahead of you.
But Tesla has a big plan that could help ease the frustration for drivers travelling between Sydney and Melbourne.
The company has proposed a $3.5 million electric vehicle charging hub in Thurgoona, near Albury. If approved, it would become Australia’s largest public EV charging hub.
The proposed site would feature 37 charging bays, giving dozens of drivers the chance to plug in at the same time. Solar panels above the bays are also expected to generate electricity for the site.

A pit stop with plenty of plugs
Located just 2.5 kilometres from the Hume Highway, the hub would be ideally placed for drivers making the long trip between NSW and Victoria.
It would also add to Tesla’s existing charging network in Albury, which currently has 16 charging spaces in the CBD.
With more Australians making the switch to electric vehicles, extra charging infrastructure could help take some pressure off busy stations, particularly during holiday periods.
Will it get the green light?
Albury City Council still needs to assess the proposal.
Public feedback is open until October 21, with a council assessment report expected by the end of November.
Of course, 37 charging bays won’t guarantee an end to queues, especially during peak travel periods. But if the project gets the go-ahead, it could make one of Australia’s busiest road trip routes a whole lot easier for EV drivers.
