Berry phone scam alert

March 7, 2024 11:18 am in by

Telephone scammers are working the Berry area, posing as Telstra representives and threatening to disconnect telephones if you don’t fork over bank card details and pin numbers.

The scammers claim communications will be cut because of roadworks in the area and are demanding a payment to have them reconnected.

Berry resident Michael Tyrell says a scam caller targeted his mother demanding a $4.90 payment.

He said, ” I rang Telstra to see if there were any phone services being done in Berry and the lady said there were no phone services being done what-so-ever.”

Mr Tyrell said his mother contacted her bank and had ATM card immediately cancelled as a result.

A Telstra spokesperson said, “It is definitely a scam and Telstra aren’t requesting customers provide credit card details due to works in Berry.”

Telstra has urged customers to remain vigilant and said that scam awareness and cyber safety requires all of us to work together and know what to look for.
