Officers from the Hunter Valley Police District (HVPD) are investigating after suspected human remains were found near Gundy Road at Scone.
The remains will undergo a forensic examination to determine if they are human remains.
HVPD officers have established a crime scene and investigations are continuing.
HVPD Crime Manager Detective Inspector Matt Zimmer said a member of the public came across the remains on Sunday, 2nd August.
"At about 9am yesterday a member of the public walking his dog contacted police after he located what he believed to be human remains located on the side of the road on Gundy Road at Scone,"
"Specialist police from the forensic services group attended the location and conducted a number of examinations throughout yesterday and last night."
"The identification of the deceased is still undetermined at this stage, a post-mortem examination will be conducted in the coming days in an attempt to establish a cause of death and police are still making inquiries in relation to identifying the deceased," he said.
"Detectives are following up a number of lines of inquiry this morning and we hope in the coming days we may be able to confirm the identification of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the death," said Detective Inspector Zimmer.
"At this stage we do believe that the remains have been at that location for a number of months."
