A driver had a lucky escape this morning when their car rolled on the New England Highway.

Emergency services were called to the highway at Ravensworth, about 1km north of Hebden Road just after 5 o'clock this morning following reports of a single vehicle accident.

Hunter Valley Police District officers say the vehicle was travelling north when they lost control of the vehicle and rolled into the southbound lanes.

The driver suffered broken bones and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The highway was closed but was reopened about an hour ago.
