Community meeting at Merriwa with the NSW Rural Fire Service this afternoon

There is a community information session happening this afternoon at the Merriwa RSL auditorium with the NSW Rural Fire Service.

A fire burning south-west of Merriwa has now been downgraded to ADVICE after whipping up yesterday afternoon to an emergency level threatening property.

Conditions eased overnight but fire fighters are urging residents to keep an eye on fire conditions throughout the day as the weather is forecast to worsen with strengthening winds.

The fire is still burning out of control and has now burnt more than 6,770 hectares.

The NSW Rural Fire Service last reported the blaze to be burning to the south-west of Merriwa in the area of the Goulburn Rivers National Park. The NSW Rural Fire Service says the fire is burning in an north-easterly direction towards Merriwa.

The community information session starts at 3:30 this afternoon.

The latest advice from the NSW Rural Fire Service is:

  • If you are areas along the Merriwa River, including Pear Flat, Doyles Flat, Peach Tree Flat, Knights Flat, Mortals Hole and Cullingral Road, monitor conditions and take advice from firefighters in the area. Follow your bush fire survival plan.
  • If you are in the area south-west of Merriwa, monitor conditions, take advice from firefighters in the area and follow your bush fire survival plan.
  • The relocation point at Merriwa RSL Club is now closed. If you relocated it is now possible to return home, if safe to do so. Follow the direction of firefighters and emergency services personnel in the area.
