Hunter bushfire updates

As of this evening the only EMERGENCY level bush fire affecting the Greater Hunter region is to Gospers Mountain fire.

The blaze has ripped through more than 45,000 hectares of land and is threatening areas north of Culoul and south of Fleetwing.

The fire is moving quickly and spotting has been recorded ahead of the firefront. Fire activity is increasing in the areas of Mellong, St Albans and Upper MacDonald.

The southerly change this evening may see the fire progress toward Putty.

The advice from the NSW Rural Fire Service is:

  • If you are in the areas north of Kallool and south of Fleet Wing, seek shelter as the fire approaches.
  • If you are in the area of Mellong, St Albans, Putty and Upper MacDonald, monitor conditions.
  • Know what you will do if the fire approaches.
  • The Putty Road is closed from Colo River to Milbrodale.

The fire burning at Greta has been downgraded to ADVICE.

The fire conditions aren't improving across New South Wales with a number of fires still at EMERGENCY level with one of those impacting the Hunter region.

This fire has now been downgraded to WATCH AND ACT.

Fire crews are being assisted by water bomber air craft to get the upper hand.

NSW RFS is urging residents to keep an eye on the situation as it could change at any time.

A fire fighter was injured while fighting this fire, its being reported that the fire fighter suffered severe heat stroke or smoke inhalation.

Another fire is burning at WATCH AND ACT  not far at North Rothbury on Wine Country Drive.

Fire fighters are getting the upper hand on the fire but the fire is still fast moving so residents are being urged to monitor the conditions.

"That fire impacted and we've got reports of damage to multiple homes in that area as well and just as we're coming out we've also seen the Gospers Road fire north of Sydney in the Hawksbury area, that fire is now getting very close to Mellong and Howles Swamp and getting very close to impacting the Putty Road that travels south up to the Hunter Valley area," said NSW RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons.

So far there has been confirmation of three properties damaged by fire.

Wine Country Drive between the Hunter Expressway and Tuckers Lane is closed in both directions.

A bush fire is burning in the Wollemi National Park area. The fire is currently 32,385 hectares in size and is being controlled but it is at an EMERGENCY LEVEL.

The fire is threatening the areas north of Culoul and south of Fleetwing and is currently 4 kilometres from Putty.

Fire activity is increasing in the areas of Mellong, St Albans and Upper MacDonald.

The Putty Road remains closed between the Colo River in the South and Grey Gums Roadhouse to the North.

From 2pm any residents leaving Putty will NOT be allowed to return due to an increase in fire behaviour.

Only emergency services will be allowed entry.

The New England Highway between Range Road and the Golden Highway is still CLOSED.

A bushfire burning there is now under control.

It has ripped through around 16 hectares on the corner of the Golden Highway and New England Highway at Whittingham.

The fire came very close to a petrol station, but crews were able to stop the blaze from traveling.

More to come.
