A contractor has undergone surgery after injuring his hand at a Muswellbrook mine.
On July 24th, a technician was raising himself in EWP self-propelled scissor lift at Bengalla mine to change a hydraulic hose on a truck - he had his right hand on the controls and his left hand on the hand rail while looking up as the lift was raising.
He contacted his left hand with a bracket on the truck when he stopped raising the EWP.
He was taken to the John Hunter Hospital and underwent surgery on his hand.
The Resources Regulator has recommended two-handed controlled scissor lifts be installed to avoid the incident happening again in the future.
"The operator was unaware that his hand was in a vulnerable position and there was no secondary handrail fitted that would have provided a higher level of safety," the Regulator said in their recommendation.
