Police are investigating after a domestic related shooting near Gresford that has left two men in a critical condition.

At about midday emergency services were called to Bingleburra Road, Bingleburra, following reports two men had been shot.

Police have been told two men – aged 35 and 28 – were involved in an altercation, where the older man sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

The younger man fled but was found a short time later nearby.

He suffered a gunshot wound to the head, which police believe was self-inflicted.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the men at the scene before they were airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.  The younger man reported to be in a critical condition and the older man in a serious but stable condition.

It's understood the men were step brothers at a family gathering.
