Merriwa Tennis Club no more after more than 100 years

After more than a century in the community, the Merriwa Tennis Club will be closing its doors.

The committee due to a range of factors have found that they can no longer continue.

Club President and Treasurer Robert Smith said they’re just spread too thin.

“The current retiring committee has put in a pretty solid effort, we’ve run some very successful comps over many years, but we’re all spread a bit thin at the moment,” said Robert Smith.

“We’ve been trying to at the same time as running the club get the facility upgraded, the court surfaces have just been in a horrendous condition they’re all cracked.”

“Just trying to get grants and stuff for that has really been quite draining, we all work jobs and trying to talk to people, the relevant grant people during working hours has just been very taxing and we have just been getting fobbed off anyway so it’s disappointing and upsetting,” he said.

In a statement on the Club’s Facebook page, they said it has been “frustrating to try and engage with politicians and bureaucrats who seem to place little value on the role that social sport plays within the Merriwa community”.

The committee is calling for anyone who would like to step forward and take over management of the club.
