Health officials ask city nurses to fill shifts in the Upper Hunter

Upper Hunter hospitals are so desperate for nursing staff management are asking staff in Newcastle to travel here to fill shifts.

That's the claim today from the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association who want they government to immediately fund more nursing position in our region and implement a minimum nurse to patient ratio.

Association Secretary Brett Holmes says the action by Hunter New England Local Health District demonstrates how desperate the situation really is.

"That's a real indication that the local health service has acknowledged that we are in crisis," he said.
