Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Maurice Collison delivered a challenge to other Mayors throughout Hunter and New England region to get their communities vaccinated.

Mayors Cr John Conners from Dungog Shire, Cr Douglas Hawkins from Liverpool Plains Shire, Cr David West from MidCoast Council, Cr Rod Scholes from Muswellbrook Shire and Cr Sue Moore from Singleton Shire have agreed to a wager of $200 each to see which region is the first to reach a 70% double dose vaccination rate for ages 15 and up.

The winning Mayor will donate the proceeds to a charity of their choice.

“The Upper Hunter Shire is doing a great job of getting the jab.

“However, we can’t be complacent. Like all communities out there, the Upper Hunter Shire is suffering. The only way we can end lockdowns and to open up our beautiful region is to have a high vaccination rate,"  Mayor Maurice Collison said.

The Upper Hunter Shire currently has a vaccination rate of around 70% first dose and 40% double dose for 15 years of age and above.

“I understand that we are all starting at different positions in this race.

“But the point of this challenge isn’t to win but rather to use our platforms to motivate our communities to go out there and get vaccinated. To those in the Upper Hunter, tell your friends, your family, your neighbours to go out there and get jabbed!” Mayor Maurice Collison said.
