Date set for Upper Hunter by-election

All sides of politics at the NRL over the weekend: Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon, NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee, One Nation's Mark Latham and Deputy Premier John Barilaro

A date has been set for the Upper Hunter by-election.

The Upper Hunter will be heading to the polls on May 22nd, 2021.

Rumours of who the candidates might be started circulate over the weekend.

There are reports that Labor’s candidate will most likely be Jeff Drayton; Jeff is a former Muswellbrook Deputy Mayor, a coal miner and a CFMEU Mining and Energy official.

The Nationals hold the seat by just over 2 per cent, and they are also going through their democratic pre-selection process.

Nominations close at midday today, Tuesday 6 April, and the front runners are James Burns and Singleton Mayor Sue Moore.

Meantime, One Nation confirmed they will be putting a candidate forward for the Upper Hunter election.

NSW member Mark Latham has said they will not be prefrencing the Labor Opposition, the Coalition or the Greens on their how to vote cards.

One Nation said they believe both parties are dedicated to the destruction of coal jobs.
