A woman has died, and a driver has been arrested following a two-vehicle crash near Greta this morning.
About 8.50am (Monday 20 July 2026), emergency services were called to the New England Highway at Harpers Hill, following reports of a crash.
At the scene, police were told a sedan and utility had crashed head on, blocking both directions of traffic.
A female driver was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, was unable to be revived. She is yet to be formally identified.
The driver of the other vehicle, believed to be a 21-year-old man, allegedly left the scene on foot.
The man was arrested nearby a short time later and taken to the John Hunter Hospital for assessment and mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established by officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District.
The scene will be forensically examined by the Crash Investigation Unit.

The New England Highway at Harpers Hill is expected to remain closed for several hours.
Motorists can divert via the Hunter Expressway, Main Road and Cessnock Road.
This diversion is suitable for all vehicles up to 26 metre B-Doubles.
Motorists should also allow extra travel time in the area and follow the directions of emergency services and traffic crews.
