Residents in Sandy Hollow and Gundal are being asked to keep a close eye on conditions today as the Maisons Gully fire continue to burn uncontrolled in the Goulburn River National Park.

The fire has now grown to 1,886 hectares, up from 845 hectares before crews had to leave last night.

Strong winds and dangerous conditions meant the blaze was left to its own devices overnight.

“Unfortunately the situation got quite dangerous yesterday afternoon,” said RFS Operation Manager Monica Bentham.

“Strong winds meant we had to ground the aircraft, and ground crews found it tough to get proper access.

“We were able to move the firefighters around to property protection on Merriwa River Trail.”

Crews have returned to the site this morning, and expect extreme conditions today – with the fire tracking east.

Residents in Sandy Hollow and Gundal are encouraged to monitor the conditions closely, and be prepared to leave if required.

The RFS say leaving towards Denman or Merriwa is the safest option. The Merriwa Showground is an emergency shelter for residents and their pets. The RSL Club can also spring into action in an emergency if needed.

In Denman, the Pony Club will be providing its land for people with horses from 10am today.
