Residents and households across the Hunter Valley are being warned about the ongoing risks posed by wild weather, following the release of new national insurance data.

Figures from NRMA Insurance show nearly 300,000 insurance claims were lodged across Australia over the past five years, equating to around one claim every nine minutes. Almost one‑third of Australians reported damage to their property or vehicle during that time.

Storms were identified as the leading cause of claims, followed by hail events and flooding, highlighting the increasing impact of extreme weather conditions.

The Hunter Valley (excluding Newcastle) ranked fifth in NSW for the number of claims on five percent, behind the Central Coast, Coffs Harbour and Mid North Coast (six percent), and Newcastle and Lake Macquarie (eight per cent).

NRMA Insurance Executive Manager for Property Claims Scott Lindsay said the data was a timely reminder that wild weather can strike anywhere at almost any time. He said regional communities should remain vigilant and ensure they are prepared for severe conditions.

Residents are being encouraged to take practical steps to reduce weather‑related risks to their homes and vehicles.
