Seniors across the Upper Hunter are being urged not to ignore persistent swelling in their lower limbs, with health experts warning it could be an early sign of more serious conditions. Chronic venous insufficiency, chronic oedema and leg ulcers affect thousands of Australians, often developing quietly until symptoms become severe.
Wounds Australia CEO Jeff Antcliff said swelling that does not improve, or is accompanied by redness or pain, should be assessed by a doctor as soon as possible.
“Swelling is often an early warning sign, and people shouldn’t wait for it to get worse before seeking help,” he said.
He said early treatment can prevent minor symptoms from escalating into long-term conditions that are difficult and costly to manage.
