An Upper Hunter Shire councillor is encouraging both the community and his fellow councillors to consider opening discussions on a potential amalgamation with Muswellbrook Council.
Councillor Troy Stolz says the region’s financial challenges, including a recent failure in a New South Wales Audit Office report, mean the Upper Hunter should explore all available options. He believes a combined local government area of around 30,000 residents could strengthen the region’s position when applying for government grants and major infrastructure investment.
“It’s well known that we’ve had some financial struggles over the years,” Stolz said.
“Jumping on board with Muswellbrook makes sense, and I think we owe it to the residents to at least have those conversations.”
He says Muswellbrook’s stronger financial footing, supported by revenue from local mining operations, could help stabilise the Upper Hunter. But he acknowledges some residents may be concerned about joining a council with a different financial profile.
“There’s going to be some negative feedback. Some people like it the way it is,” he said.
“But long‑term sustainability needs to be considered.”
Stolz says he hasn’t had any formal conversations with Muswellbrook’s leadership, but would welcome the chance.
“I’d happily sit down and have a beer with Mayor Jeff Drayton and discuss this further if he’s up for it.”
Any potential merger would require extensive public consultation and assessment by the State Government.
