Regional NSW continues to dominate rooftop solar adoption, with nine of the state’s top ten electorates for installations located outside Sydney, according to new data.

More than one million NSW homes and businesses now have rooftop solar, representing around a third of all households across the state. When the sun is shining, rooftop systems are generating more electricity than all of the state’s coal‑fired power stations combined. In the final quarter of last year, rooftop solar and large‑scale solar farms supplied 32 per cent of NSW’s electricity needs.

Locally, the Upper Hunter electorate has 17,784 rooftop solar systems, placing it 15th statewide. Maitland ranks 20th with 16,397 systems, while Cessnock sits 30th with 15,975. Energy specialists say a typical four‑person household with a 6.6‑kilowatt system can save up to $1,400 a year on their power bills.
