From bakers to barbers, builders and beyond — the NSW Government and TikTok are joining forces to showcase the power of skilled trades, with a message that resonates strongly across the Hunter.
The Tools of the Trade initiative is highlighting how real tradespeople are using social media to share their expertise and attract the next generation of workers. With more than 48 million #LearnOnTikTok posts, trades like plumbing, construction and floristry are capturing the imagination of young Australians.
One standout creator is Yana Marks (@sydneyplumberchick), who has amassed nearly 390,000 followers by sharing her experiences as a female plumber. With women making up only two per cent of plumbers nationwide, her content is inspiring others to take up the tools.
The push comes as the Hunter faces ongoing skills shortages in key industries — from construction and energy to care and manufacturing. Local TAFE campuses and employers say initiatives like this can help students see the value of hands-on work, particularly with major regional infrastructure and renewable projects now underway.
The NSW Government says trades remain the backbone of the state’s workforce, with almost two million Australians working in skilled roles.
