The Woneruah Local Aboriginal Land Council will commence construction of a new Keeping Place as soon as final approval is granted by Muswellbrook Shire Council.
A smoking ceremony and sod turning was conducted on the Maitland Road site yesterday.
The Keeping Place will house artefacts discovered during the building of the Hunter Expressway.
Council Chief Executive De-anne Douglas said this includes cutting materials, hammers, spear tips and other items of cultural significance.
Transport for NSW has donated $300,000 towards the Keeping Place behind the Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Land Council office on Maitland Road.
Aboriginal Engagement Manager Jade Williams said this is part of Transport’s cultural offset agreement which was in place during construction of the Hunter Expressway.
“A Keeping Place is a place to house artefacts and host cultural programs vital for preserving heritage, educating the public, empowering communities and promoting cultural pride and reconciliation,” he said.
