The ceremonial turning of the first sod has marked the start of major works on the long-awaited Singleton Bypass.
The $700-million project will free up George Street for local traffic while eliminating around 25,000 car movements a day from the centre of town.
The major piece of infrastructure will be eight kilometres long and feature six bridges.
Regional Transport and Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said over 1300 jobs will be created during the construction phase.
The State Government said the new bypass is expected to be ready for traffic in late 2026…weather permitting.
Mrs Aitchison said the bypass will lead to quicker travel times.
