The condition of a Muswellbrook rugby league player continues to improve after sustaining a head knock last weekend.

Rams forward Wade McKenzie was airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle on Sunday afternoon in a critical condition.

He was knocked out cold in the Group 21 first grade game against Denman at Olympic Park.

Last night the hospital confirmed his condition had moved to stable after being listed as serious but stable earlier in the day.

The update comes as the New South Wales Rugby League refused to answer questions about head injury protocols in light of the serious injury.

Questions from the Hunter Valley Newsroom about the incident went unanswered after receiving a short response from the game’s governing body.
