An Upper Hunter coal mine operator said more timely decisions by the State Government would assist towns like Muswellbrook adjust the transition away from the industry.
The New South Wales Parliament is investigating land use post-mining including the future of BHP’s Mount Arthur.
Vice President for NSW Coal Liz Watts has told the inquiry…the community has told them they want the government to make quicker decisions.
BHP is still investigating possible future uses for Mount Arthur once it closes down in 2030.
Currently, the company is required to return the land, 5k’s south of Muswellbrook, to an agricultural and wooded area.
Ms Watts also told the Inquiry, the community wants to see it become a multi-use facility that utilises existing infrastructure.
