Police are appealing for public assistance to identify the parents or carers of a young boy found alone in Waratah overnight.
Officers from Newcastle City Police District were called to Station Street about midnight on Monday, where they were told the child had been located in a drain corridor between Station and Platt streets.
Police have been speaking with residents and searching the surrounding area but have so far been unable to locate the boy’s parents or guardians.
The child is described as being about three to four years old, with an olive complexion, small build, brown hair and brown eyes. He is non-verbal. He was found wearing a blue singlet top with a Sonic character on the front, pink track pants and no shoes.
Anyone who recognises the boy or has information that may assist police is urged to contact Newcastle Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
