A new report suggests young defence veterans, particularly those living in regional areas, are avoiding mental health support due to complex claims processes and lengthy wait times.
National data included in the report shows 67 per cent of younger veterans experienced increased stress or anxiety after attempting to access support services, raising concerns about how accessible the system is for those seeking help.
The findings indicate mixed outcomes for local veterans and their families, despite reforms introduced following the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.
Co‑Founder of Veterans First Consulting, Kevin Chapman, says advocates can play a critical role in bridging the gap between veterans and the support system.
“That’s where advocates can really step in, helping local veterans navigate the process and get the support they need,” he said.
