New research suggests residents across regional New South Wales are underestimating just how much support there is for renewable-energy projects in their communities.
Polling of nearly 2000 people across key Renewable Energy Zones (REZ), including the Hunter, has found that while just 37 per cent of respondents believe there is majority support for clean energy in their region, an average of 62 per cent actually support local renewable-energy projects.
Opposition to clean-energy developments remains steady at 17 per cent across the zones.
The polling was commissioned by the Renew Australia for All campaign and released by Farmers for Climate Action, covering Renewable Energy Zones in New England, Central West Orana, the Hunter and Illawarra in New South Wales, as well as regions in Victoria and Queensland.
Farmers for Climate Action says the findings show a strong and consistent majority of regional Australians back clean-energy investment despite vocal opposition in some areas.
The organisation says the results highlight the need for better communication around renewable-energy benefits and stronger engagement with local communities.
