Patients across the Upper Hunter are expected to benefit from newly released National Telehealth Standards designed to improve the safety and reliability of online medical care. The standards were developed in consultation with clinicians, digital health providers and policy experts, with a strong focus on supporting patients living in regional and remote areas.

The updated guidelines outline how telehealth platforms should operate, including requirements around data protection, service quality and clinician responsibilities. They aim to ensure that patients have clearer expectations when accessing care online, particularly in communities where in‑person appointments can be difficult to reach.

Digital Health Ambassador for Patients Australia, Richard Skimin, says telehealth has become an essential part of Australia’s health system, especially outside major cities.

“Telehealth is becoming increasingly popular, but it’s vital appropriate standards are in place,” he said.

Mr Skimin says regional users in particular stand to benefit, with the standards helping to address long‑standing challenges around distance, availability and access to specialists.

The new guidelines are now in effect nationally.
