The new rooftop helipad at John Hunter Hospital has been approved for use following successful day and night test landings.

The helipad sits atop the hospital’s new seven‑storey acute services building, part of the $835 million John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct redevelopment. It is expected to become operational when the new building opens to patients later this year.

The facility includes two helicopter landing pads and a dedicated lift providing direct access to critical care services, including the emergency department and intensive care unit. The design is intended to reduce transfer times for critically ill and injured patients.

Construction of the helipad required more than 50 truckloads of concrete and sits around 30 metres above ground level. The broader redevelopment will deliver a new emergency department, expanded intensive care capacity, additional operating theatres, maternity and neonatal services, and more than 900 extra car parking spaces.

Interior fit‑out and landscaping works are continuing, with construction of the new building expected to be completed in mid‑2026, followed by an operational commissioning period.
