A proposal for a large-scale solar farm at Mitchells Flat has been abandoned, with developer Elgin Energy confirming it will not proceed with the project. The plan would have seen a 550‑acre portion of productive agricultural land converted into a solar generation site.
The proposal sparked significant concern throughout the Mitchells Flat community and the wider Hunter, with residents raising fears about the loss of farmland, environmental impacts and long‑term changes to the regional landscape.
Federal Hunter MP Dan Repacholi welcomed the decision, saying locals had clearly expressed their feelings about the project.
“The news that Elgin has decided not to progress the proposed Mitchell’s Flat Solar Farm is a really welcome outcome for our local community,” he said.
“This shows just how important it is that local voices are heard when it comes to major developments in our region. The Hunter should always have a strong say in what happens on our land and I’ll continue to stand up for our communities to make sure that happens.”
Residents who opposed the project say they are relieved that the land will remain available for agricultural use.
