Upper Hunter Shire Council said Merriwa residents should not be alarmed by revelations about the presence of radiation in their water.
The council issued advice about this issue yesterday after regular testing discovered drinking water from the town’s water supply groundwater bores has shown radiation levels are above screening values.
GM Greg McDonald said this does not mean the drinking water is unsafe.

He said further testing is being undertaken to help direct what further action should be taken and the community will be kept updated.
The testing process is expected to take around ten weeks.
