Weather-related insurance claims across the Upper Hunter have soared, already passing the total for all of 2024.

And locals are being warned the surge in claims is likely to result in yet another hike in insurance premiums.

Insurer NRMA says it has received more than 32,000 claims nationally in the first half of 2025, more than half of them in February, March and April.

More recently the Upper Hunter region was heavily impacted by devastating flooding that struck NSW during May.

Singleton received more than 100mm between May 15 and 20, causing road closures and forcing the Australian Christian College to close it’s doors for two days.

Maerani Station, east of Singleton received 135mm of rain during the downpour.

The Singleton and Upper Hunter LGAs are both now eligible for disaster assistance following the flood event.

The Bureau of Meteorology is warning locals to expect more severe weather in coming months.
