Hunter Water has completed a major upgrade of its Harpers Hill Reservoir and connecting pipeline, delivering a significant increase in storage capacity for communities in and around Lochinvar, Greta, Branxton and North Rothbury.
The old 0.9‑megalitre steel reservoir, built in the 1950s, has been replaced with a modern 7‑megalitre concrete structure. A new 2.5‑kilometre pipeline has also been constructed, linking the Lochinvar pump station to the site to ensure the larger reservoir can be filled even during periods of peak demand.
Hunter Water Executive Manager Infrastructure Delivery Justin Watts said the upgrade provides greater security for the growing region. He said the new capacity gives residents confidence water will be available during hot weather, times of high demand and as the population expands over the next 15 to 20 years.
Construction began in mid‑2024 and was completed in February, with the original reservoir now decommissioned. The project forms part of Hunter Water’s wider program to improve the reliability of the Lower Hunter water network.
Along with the nearby North Rothbury Reservoir, the new Harpers Hill infrastructure will support reliable supply for up to 3,000 homes and businesses. Mr Watts said residents are still encouraged to practise Smart Water Choices to help preserve the region’s precious water resources, particularly during dry periods.
