The Upper Hunter Shire Council has delayed the closure of the aged care facility in Merriwa, which houses 16 residents.
There was a strong community turn out to Monday night’s meeting, with the Merriwa District Progress Association spearheading the fight to save Gummun Place. Association president Steve Gowland says they achieved what they set out to do, which was to stop Council closing the doors on July 1st.
“Council has resolved to begin a process to hand over the control of Gummun Place,” he said.
“However, it hasn’t been specified to who it would be handed to.”
Several locals spoke at the meeting advocating for the home, urging Council to put the communities need ahead of profit.
It comes after expressions of interest to take over the facility fell flat.
