EnergyCo is celebrating the completion of the first stage of network infrastructure works for the Hunter‑Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone, marking a significant milestone for the region’s energy future.
The initial works include the installation of fibre optic communications linking the Muswellbrook Switching Station, Muswellbrook Bulk Supply Point and Mitchell Line Switching Station. The upgrades build on existing infrastructure to deliver a smarter and more efficient Upper Hunter electricity system with minimal new construction.
EnergyCo has commissioned Ausgrid to upgrade its distribution network, with the project expected to unlock one gigawatt of power in the region by 2028. The opening phase alone will deliver 350 megawatts of additional capacity, representing more than a third of the total increase required for the Hunter‑Central Coast REZ.
The project is the first renewable energy zone in NSW to upgrade existing distribution poles and wires instead of constructing new transmission lines. It is expected to create around 590 jobs during construction and a further 220 ongoing positions once operational, with two new energy hubs to be built in the Muswellbrook local government area.
