Muswellbrook Mayor Steve Reynolds said the council tried unsuccessfully to get a clause about the provision of more housing included in the consent order for the extension of the Mount Pleasant Coal Mine.
Councillor Jeff Drayton is calling on mining companies in the shire to start investing in providing more housing in the area to entice their staff to live where they work instead of take their pay straight out of town.
Councillor Reynolds said this is something council has been putting forward for a while now.
