Muswellbrook Shire Council is investigating the sale of land gifted to The Richard Gill School following concerns raised after the school’s merger with Melos Education Group.
Council met with parents from the school community on Monday night, after the school declined a request to either return the land and facilities or enter into an agreement outlining what would happen if the school was unsuccessful.
The land and facilities were gifted to the school by the community, with Council stating the intention was primarily for music and STEM education, drawing on the legacy of Richard Gill AO.
Following the school’s merger with Melos Education Group, a private religious education network, Council also wrote to Melos requesting it enter into an agreement to uphold promises made to Council and the community. Council says no response has been received.
An independent law firm has been engaged to investigate the sale of the land. Council says it will continue to provide updates to the community as the matter progresses.
