Catastrophic Flooding Devastates Barrington Tops Wildlife Sanctuary

May 22, 2025 11:02 am in by

Aussie Ark’s wildlife sanctuary in the Barrington Tops has been smashed by torrential rain, with over 420mm falling in just a few days and counting.

The sanctuary plays a critical role in protecting some of Australia’s most endangered and threatened species and has suffered major infrastructure damage. They report enclosures have been inundated, fencing destroyed, and key access roads cut.

However, all the animals have been moved to safer ground and are accounted for. They are now facing an extensive recovery effort as they tally the damage.

Additional support crews from Aussie Ark’s partners at the Australian Reptile Park are reportedly on-site, assisting with flood response efforts. The sanctuary remains inaccessible to the public, while some staff remain isolated due to road closures and flooding.

A formal flood recovery appeal has been established to support the major repair work ahead and to future-proof the sanctuary against worsening extreme weather events. Donations can be made at https://bit.ly/FloodRebuild
