Holding a by-election to replace sacked Upper Hunter Shire Councillor Elizabeth Flaherty would cost ratepayers $125,000.

The cost is included in a briefing paper prepared for an Extraordinary Council meeting next week to resolve the way forward.

The document says the alternative is to apply to the Minister for Local Government to dispense with the need to hold another ballot to fill the casual vacancy.
