Attempts by the Upper Hunter Shire Council to gag one of its councillors appear to be futile.

Councillor Elizabeth Flaherty was formally censured by her colleagues earlier this week for alleged breaches of the council’s Code of Practise between July and December last year.

The breaches include making unauthorised public comments and failing to respond to an email while she was on leave.

Councillor Flaherty said the media ban on councillors reflects something more akin to Chairman Mao and communist China.

“I am supported by the law. I will not be silenced,” she said.
