• What’s involved
o Youth Mental Health First Aid is 14 hour course over 4 evenings during August and September.
o It’s for parents, teachers, coaches and carers of teenagers and young adults. Anyone is encouraged to attend however.
• Content of course
o We talk about signs of mental health problems:
 Anxiety
 Depression
 Eating Disorders
 Psychosis
 Substance Use
• Why it’s so important parents/carers to have this knowledge
o Research tells us the earlier the intervention the better the outcome for the individual
o Showing our adolescents and young adults you are comfortable having conversations about mental health to ensure they are more likely to discuss problems with you rather than their mates, which is the trend presently
o Knowing where to go as a parent with a mental health problem
o Starting chats around dinner table about good mental health and better wellbeing.
o Normalising talking about wellbeing and mental health
