The Festival of the Fleeces is returning to Merriwa this weekend, celebrating the region’s wool industry under this year’s theme, Nothing equals wool.
Traffic is expected to increase along the Golden Highway from today as visitors arrive for opening night activities, ahead of a full program across the weekend.
Saturday will see the town’s main street host the annual Running of the Sheep, alongside a family fun day expected to attract large crowds. Events will then continue at the Merriwa Showground with the yard dog competition, vintage car display and whip cracking.
Fireworks are scheduled to cap off Saturday night, lighting up the Merriwa sky following a day of entertainment and competitions.
The 2026 festival will conclude on Sunday morning with a woolshed tour, giving visitors an insight into traditional wool production and the area’s agricultural heritage.
