Renters and property owners across NSW are being invited to have their say on proposed minimum energy efficiency standards for rental homes.

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, along with NSW Fair Trading, is investigating the introduction of Minimum Energy Efficiency Rental Standards, known as MEERS.

If introduced, the standards could set mandatory requirements for energy‑related features such as insulation, heating and cooling, and hot water systems in rental properties. The proposal follows findings that rental homes are typically less energy‑efficient than owner‑occupied homes, particularly in lower‑income and regional areas.

The NSW Government says improving energy efficiency could reduce power bills and help address issues such as mould, which can worsen health outcomes. Even basic upgrades could save renters between $160 and $750 each year in energy costs.

The consultation is open to renters, landlords, real estate agents and tradespeople, with detailed options outlined in a public discussion paper. Feedback is open until 31 May at https://www.nsw.gov.au/have-your-say/energy-efficiency-rental-standards
